Evaluating websites

The quality of information found on the Internet is often directly related to who created it. Consider whether you would seek advice on a toothache from a website created by someone off the street or would you prefer to use information created by a dentist?

It is important to note that:

  • Anyone can publish on the Internet on any topic, whether or not they have training, education or experience on the topic. Click on the link below to view an interesting site:

  • No standards exist for Web publishing
  • The Internet is often used as a forum for voicing personal opinions
  • Similarly, many websites are business related or commercial and have personal interests in providing the information they do to promote their own products or defend them. For example, consider a cigarette company providing information on the effects of smoking. Would they provide reliable information or be more likely to down play the effects in order to sell more of their product?

For these reasons, you need to evaluate whether the information you have found on the Internet is reliable or not.
