Connecting to the UOW Library wireless network using Microsoft Windows Vista

IMPORTANT! READ THIS BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

  • Ensure your laptop has a WPA-compliant wireless card and driver.
  • Before you begin this procedure, ensure you turn off ALL running firewalls, including: Windows Firewall, McAfee and Symantec/Norton. They can be re-enabled once the Thawte certificate has been installed.

Procedure

  1. Click on the Windows Start button at the bottom left of your desktop, then select Network
  2. Select Network and Sharing Center, then select Manage wireless networks from the Tasks menu.
  3. Control Panel -> Manage Wireless Networks: Click Add to add a new wireless network
  4. Select Manually create a network profile
  5. On the Enter information for the wireless network input screen:- Under "Network name", type UOW
  6. Under "Security Type", select WPA Enterprise
  7. Under "Encryption type", select TKIP
  8. Leave "Security Key/Passphrase" empty
  9. Check the Start this connection automatically box
  10. Click Next
  11. Select Change connection settings
  12. Check top three boxes in the Connection tab
  13. Click the Security tab
  14. Security tab:
    Under Choose a network authentication method: select Protected EAP (PEAP)
  15. Click the Settings button
  16. Protected EAP Properties:
    Check the Validate server certificate box
    Under "Trusted Root Certification Authorities":
    Check Equifax Secure Global eBusiness CA-1
    Under "Select Authentication Method:" select Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
    Click the Configure button
  17. EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties:
    Uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password (and domain if any).
    Click OK three times, and close the Connection Wizard
    Click on the Toolbar popup Additional information is required to connect to ACHERNAR-BG
  18. Enter Credentials:
    Enter your email/SOLS username and password. Leave Logon Domain blank.
  19. Validate Server Certificate
    Select OK to accept the Thawte Server CA certificate and connect to the wireless network.

Problems?

  • If you are unable to connection, try rebooting your computer.
  • If you are still unable to connect, proceed to the Information Desk on the ground floor, and ask for a Rover to help you. Rovers are available Monday to Friday between 9.30am to 4.30pm.

Proxy information

To surf web sites outside the University, you will need to configure your browser to use our proxy server:

FireFox (1.5)

  1. Click "Tools" -> "Options…", Select the General tab, Click "Connection Settings…",
  2. Select "Automatic proxy configuration URL:", enter http://www.uow.edu.au/autoproxy.pac and click "OK", then "OK" to close the "Options" window.

FireFox (2.0+)

  1. Click "Tools" -> "Options…", Select "Advanced" then select the Network tab
  2. Under "Connection", click "Settings…", select "Automatic proxy configuration URL:", enter http://www.uow.edu.au/autoproxy.pac and click "OK", then "OK" to close the "Options" window.

Internet Explorer (6 and 7)

  1. Click "Tools" -> "Internet Options…", select the Connections tab, click "LAN settings"
  2. Check "Use Automatic Configuration Scripts"
  3. Enter http://www.uow.edu.au/autoproxy.pac and click "OK" then "OK" to close the "Options" window.
