Using Library learning spaces

The Library provides a large range of learning spaces, including group study areas, quiet study spaces, relaxed reading lounges and state-of-the-art teaching labs. We can help – whether you’re looking for somewhere to plug in your laptop, a quiet spot to cram for an exam or a private room to complete a group assignment.

Quiet study

Quiet study spaces are provided on all levels of the Library, with private study carrels and other individual seating areas. Please consider other clients by keeping noise to a minimum in these areas.

Group study

The Library caters for group study through formal and informal spaces. Look for the larger group work tables on all levels of the Library or book a private Group Study Room.

Group Study Room locations

  • Formal rooms are located on the Ground Floor
  • Informal spaces are available throughout the Library – ask at Information
  • Presentation rooms and facilities are also available through Information Technology Services, Building 17
  • Group Study Rooms are equipped with tables, chairs, whiteboard and wireless connection
  • Bring your own laptop or borrow one

Group Study Room access

  • Bookings are made online
  • Bookings are available for a maximum of two hours and can be made up to two weeks in advance
  • Keys are available for collection from the Loans Desk
  • Fines apply for late or non-return of keys
  • Rooms must be vacated 30 minutes before Library closing

Group Study Room conditions

  • Rooms are available for UOW student use only
  • Use is in accordance with the Library Code of Conduct
  • Groups may be asked to leave if these rules are not adhered to

Powered study

Many of the desks in the Library provide access to power so you can plug in your laptop and work where it suits you best.

Music and Media spaces

The Media Room on the Ground Floor houses newspapers and historical newspaper indexes, microfilm and microfilm readers, music scores and music CDs, video and DVD players. Browse and borrow from an extensive collection; listen to music; or watch DVDs or videos. Access the Music Room from the Media Room.

  • Access from the Media Room, Ground Floor
  • The Music Room is equipped with audio system, CD/DVD players, turntable, television screens, table and chairs
  • Headphones are available to borrow from Short Loans

  • Bookings can be made at the Loans Desk
  • Bookings are available for a maximum of two hours

Teaching Labs

The Library’s new Labs feature the latest technology, allowing for practical computer-based learning as well as face-to-face instruction from our expert librarians. Labs are located on Level 2 and are used throughout the year for ILIP programs, other Library classes and subject-based information literacy training. When not booked for classes, the Labs are available for general use.

Postgraduate Space

The Postgraduate Space offers two study options:

  • Individual, silent study (Room 1)
  • Quiet group work and discussion (Room 2)

Postgraduate Space location

  • Ground Floor, behind the Law Library and Leisure Reading areas
  • The Postgraduate Space is equipped with eight computers (Room 1 only), tables, chairs and wireless connection

Postgraduate Space access

  • Available to UOW postgraduate, honours and graduate diploma students
  • Access via keypad – ask at Information for the security code
  • Bookings not required

Postgraduate Space conditions

  • Postgraduate Space – Room 1 is available for silent study only
  • Rooms are available for UOW student use only
  • Use is in accordance with the Library Code of Conduct
  • Groups may be asked to leave if these rules are not adhered to

Academic Space

The Academic Space provides an alternative workspace for permanent academic staff.

Academic Space location

  • Level 2, north-western corner
  • The Academic Space is equipped with four computers, tables, chairs and wireless connection

Academic Space access

  • Available to UOW permanent academic staff
  • Access via keypad – ask at Information for the security code
  • Bookings not required

Academic Space conditions

  • Rooms are available for UOW staff use only
  • Use is in accordance with the Library Code of Conduct

Follow Me Printing

Everyone hates to queue. With this in mind, we have introduced Follow Me Printing. You can choose any free printer/copier in the Library or a printer in the Student Central labs to release your print job.
