Who can become a member?

Your membership category depends on your relationship to the university. Select your category by determining which of the following groups you belong to.

Joining as category 02:

  • Fellows of UOW
  • University Council members
  • University Senate members
  • Visiting lecturers/researchers attached to UOW departments
  • Honorary Post Doctoral Research Associates

Joining as category 16:

  • UOW Alumni (graduates) Fee may apply
  • UOW former staff Fee may apply
  • Staff from the following organisations:
  • ANSTO
  • BHP/Bluescope
  • IRIS
  • ITC
  • South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Area Health Service
  • TAFE (Illawarra campus only) Fee applies
  • UniCentre
  • UOW Ethics Policy Committee
  • UOW Research Centre (e.g. Nortel).

Joining as category 19: Fee applies

  • General public
  • UniCentre life members
  • TAFE students (Illawarra campus only)
  • Students and staff of other universities affiliated under the University Library of Australia (ULA) borrowing scheme. The current list of affiliated libraries includes most Australian university libraries.
  • HSC students (living in or attending schools in the Wollongong and Shellharbour local government areas only)

How do I join?

When you apply for membership you will need to bring some documentation with you, as listed by membership category below. If you have not determined your category, see "Who can become a member?"; otherwise select your category: 02 16 19 Other

 Category 02 Documentation required
Fellows of UOW, University Council, University Senate, visiting lecturers, researchers A letter of introduction from Department head.
Honorary Post Doctoral Research Associates A letter of introduction from University Recruitment.
How to register
  1. Complete and submit application form available from the Lending Desk at the Wollongong Campus Library.
  2. Collect your UOW Visitor borrower's card in person from the Lending Desk at the Wollongong Campus Library.
  3. Membership expires on 28 February of each year. Annual re-application is required.
  4. Borrowing conditions apply as for academic staff.
Cost Category 02
No Fee.

  3. Collect your UOW Visitor borrower's card in person from the Lending Desk at the Wollongong Campus Library.

  5. Borrowing conditions apply.
  6. You will not be able to borrow or use some items.
 Cost Category 16
No fee.
Except as follows:
  • Ex-UOW staff: $50 annual fee (including GST). Those employed for more than 15 years are exempt from the fee.
  • UOW Alumni (graduates): $50 annual fee (including GST).
  • Illawarra TAFE staff: $50 annual fee (including GST).

  • Current student card and proof of enrolment or proof of employment for staff

UniCentre life members

TAFE students - Illawarra campus only
  • Current student card
  • Driver's licence or Medicare card
  • Current printout from TAFE Library borrowing record showing no fines and no overdue books
HSC students - Wollongong and Shellharbour local government areas only

If under 18:

  • Current student card OR letter from school confirming student status
  • Parent's or Guardian's Driver's Licence or photo ID
  • Parent/Guardian needs to sign indemnity/application form

If 18 years or over:

  • Current student card OR letter from school confirming student status
  • Photo identification
How to register
  1. Complete and submit application form available from the Lending Desk at the Wollongong Campus Library.
  2. Pay fee, if applicable (see below).
  3. Collect your UOW Visitor borrower's card in person from the Lending Desk at the Wollongong Campus Library.
  4. Membership expires on 28 February of each year. Annual re-application is required.
    Exception: HSC student membership (both annual and two-year membership) expires 30 November. Re-application is required at the end of membership period.
  5. Borrowing conditions apply.
  6. You will not be able to borrow or use some items.
 Cost Category 19
  • $30 annual fee (including GST) applies to HSC students covering the period from November to November of the following year
  • $50 two year fee (including GST) applies to HSC students covering the period from January to November of the following year
  • $50 annual fee (including GST) applies to:
    • ULA borrowers / Distance education students
    • Life union members
    • TAFE students
  • $165 annual fee (including GST) applies to:
    • general public/community borrowers.
